Creatures of Amalthea

As a high school art student I LOVED fantasy art, the magic of mythical creatures as well as the intricate detail and vivid, rich colors. Imagination International, Inc. is now housing an amazing drawing program for young and old featuring some breathtaking creatures.

Artist Terryl Whitlatch created a world of amazing creatures and is sharing them with all of us.  Not only is she sharing them she is teaching us how to create them ourselves.

On the III website you can go right into Creatures of Amalthea and learn how Terryl creates her creatures, from her story lines and animal inspiration to building her creatures from the bones up. She takes into consideration the smallest details of the how and why of each animal and how they will need to be structured to not only survive but thrive in their own habitats.

I decided to give it a try and picked out one of the 12 animals, the Esquilina, then stepped through the detailed, step by step drawing steps and then tackled coloring my Esquilina in a lengthy list of Copic markers.  I want to share the progression but I am not giving all the steps or the instructions because I want you to check it out in person! Worried that you “can not draw”? First off I am not buying it, anyone can learn to draw with the right instructions, BUT Terryl even has line art of all of the Amalthea creatures, so you can print them off on your favorite Copic paper and use the steps to color them up.

Now my daughter is chomping at the bit to try one on her own too! In addition to extensive lessons on the creation process, drawing and coloring each of the 12 creatures featured. Imagination International, Inc. has created programs to go along with these lessons to be used with students in a school setting, after school programming and even week long camps.

Honestly I was thrilled to share the program having been an art educator myself and LOVED creating my Esquilina.

Thank you so much for stopping by to take a look!

Have a Happy Colorful Day!

Hippy Hopping today with Hero Arts!

MMH_logo_1000x1197

Hero arts asked if the Copic team would like to play along for this month’s My Monthly Hero March 2016 kit and I said “Yes Please!”

The kit is FULL of fun stuff: 12 coloring cards on XPressIt paper, coordinating stamps and dies, an Intense Black ink cube (alcohol marker-friendly), extra XPressIt paper, assorted notecards, and a package of gems.

There are even add ons to make your kit go further!

I played with two of the coloring cards that came in the kit. Here is the first:

I added a sentiment right onto the card with one of the optional Ribbon messages and because the ink that came in the kit works with my Copics I colored the whole image up and got it on a card base wa-la! I used a lot of coloring tips that Marianne Walker shares in her Coloring Flowers Book.

Here is a close up, I added a little bling to the letters and dragonfly wings with a atyou Spica pen but it is hard to see 🙂 Copic Colors Used: B41, V12, V04, V17, G20, G21, G24, G28, YG09, B99, BV20, C0, C1

My next card I created with another coloring card and this time added not only a sentiment but stamped some of the matching flowers on one of the blank sheets of paper as well.

New Copic Carrying Case

Did you know that there is a new Copic case out there? It will carry all your Copic sketch, Ciao or Various Inks in style!

blog case 1

The case is a heavy plastic and aluminum exterior with a sturdy handle and 2 latches that can be locked if desired.

blog case 2

The interior is lined with a thin foam layer throughout and squeezes down on the plastic storage cases that fit the Sketch, Ciao, and Various Ink. They squeeze down enough that even with one smaller plastic container in the center of my carrying case I can close and latch the lid, shake the case and the Copics stay put.

blog case 3

The case fits the 72 marker holders perfectly! Here is a shot with 5 plastic 72 sketch marker holders. This will hold 360 sketch markers and look, I have room to spare! Most days I would not be carrying all my markers, but I can and have space for my small sketch book, a bag of Multiliners and packet of images if I want. I could even tuck an ABS-1 Air Brush in that space hmm…

blog case 4

Lastly it also has a shoulder strap that attaches to metal rings on the sides of the carrying case, so if you really load up you can carry the weight a little easier.

  • The cases come in 4 colors
  • 13.5 x 18 x 7″

For those looking for a different option for carrying all of their markers this could be a good fit. You can find them at Imagination International, Inc. and slowly now at other Copic retailers.

Have a Happy Colorful Week!

Inky Fingers and Fun!

Look out Atlanta here I come. In 5 and a half weeks I will be flying my way to (another new destination for me) Atlanta, Georgia! I will be teaching the Copic Standard and Intermediate Certification as well as the brand new Copic Flower class. All three classes have been open for registration a couple weeks now and are filling fast so if you would like to come play get signed up today!

Copic-ColoringFlowersManuelArt-9-24-1521087

In the mean time here is a little inky fun for today! I created a VERY SIMPLE background for a little Valentines card for my Doodlebug. I used my Copic Various Ink and created the background on a shiny photo paper. I also used a straw for this particular technique, mine happens to be a milkshake straw so don’t let the size throw you of 🙂

blog ink 1

Step #1 – I dripped 3 dots of one of my colors onto my paper.

blog ink 2

Step #2 – I blew through the straw quickly splattering the ink.

blog ink 3

Step #3 – I repeated the process with 2 more colors.

blog ink 4

Like anything else you might have to play a little with colors that work well together!

Step#4 – Patiently wait for the ink to dry (ha ha) and attach your new paper onto your card!

blog ink 5

I used Various inks in BG00, YG01, B02 for the background, the stamp is by Taylored Expressions and the Copic colors used are FYG1, YG01, FRV1, RV04, BG000, Boo. I also use my Kirarina Wink to create the doodled outline on the card. It worked great over the ink and on the slick surface!

Hope you have a Happy Colorful Week!
